Our Story
In 2015, at 7 months pregnant with my youngest of 3, I was transporting dogs for a rescue from CT to Northern MA with my middle child in tow. Unfortunately, a distracted driver rear ended me and changed my life forever, something I never imagined and would never wish on anyone else.
I became permanently disabled with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) affecting both upper and lower extremities, this neurological disorder impacting my memory and information processing was especially difficult as I was previously a Network Engineer and used to be and eloquent speaker.
After multiple surgeries, device implantations, physical therapy, and various procedures without pain relief, I was recommended to consider a service dog to assist with mobility, memory, and my anxiety. I researched breeders, trainers, and ADA service dog laws before obtaining my first service dog, Goose, in late 2019 through Chelsea. Following board and train completion, we worked with Common Sense K9/Freedom Labradors for public access and task training.
Goose gave me the independence that I needed and changed my life in ways I can't even begin to describe. However, due to multiple attacks by fraudulent service dogs in public spaces while living in Texas, I made the difficult decision to semi-retire Goose for his wellbeing.
After once again going on a waitlist and taking on the financial burden (Service Dogs are *not* covered by insurance) I was paired with Jarvis who was Board and Trained by Chelsea at Common Sense K9/Freedom Labradors. We went through training together once again, and he too assists with mobility and anxiety/vestibular disorder mitigation. I
With mentor guidance, I transitioned Goose into a career change, establishing Southern Comfort Working Dogs to extend the Comfort Dog Program southward. After extensive searching across nearly a year, multiple offers, and home inspections, zoning complications delayed permanent facility establishment. We are currently one acre short of zoning requirements at our desired property and operate from a temporary location while pursuing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
